ATLANTA (AP) — Georgia’s Stacey Abrams will join the faculty at Howard University in Washington, D.C., the next step in her reemergence after the Democrat lost her second bid to be governor of Georgia last year to Republican Brian Kemp.Howard, one of the nation’s top historically Black colleges, said it was appointing Abrams as the Ronald W. Walters Endowed Chair for Race and Black Politics beginning in September. “Stacey Abrams has proven herself an essential voice and eager participant in protecting American democracy -– not just for certain populations, but for everyone with the fundamental right to make their voices heard,” Howard President Wayne A. I. Frederick said in a statement. The 49-year-old political activist and lawyer won’t be a traditional full-time faculty member, the university says, but she will lecture, invite guest speakers, and host symposiums. Howard says she will work across multiple academic departments to focus on “real-world solutions” to p...Connecticut woman shot by officer gets $1.1M settlement

HAMDEN, Conn. (AP) — A Connecticut woman who was seriously injured when a police officer opened fire on her and her boyfriend as they sat in a car unarmed has settled a lawsuit over the shooting for about $1.1 million.Stephanie Washington was struck four times when Hamden officer Devin Eaton fired 13 bullets at the stopped car in New Haven on April 16, 2019, according to her lawsuit and a prosecutor’s investigation that found the shooting unjustified. She suffered multiple injuries, including spine and hip area fractures, a graze wound to her forehead and enduring trauma, the lawsuit said. The shooting sparked several protests. Eaton, who resigned from the force last year, was charged with felony assault, pleaded no contest and was sentenced to probation and community service — punishment that also drew criticism from Washington and her supporters for being too lenient.Eaton and the town of Hamden, two of several defendants in the federal court lawsuit, did not admit liability ...Publisher drops children’s illustrator for anti-trans notes

The text on the notes read: “Feeling Cute Might Shoot Some Children.”The notes were found during a period of heightened rhetoric and laws targeting transgender people across the country and came just days after a shooting at a Christian school in Nashville that left six dead. Social media accounts and other sources indicate that the shooter identified as a man; police said the shooter “was assigned female at birth” but used male pronouns on a social media profile. After the Nashville shooting, a false a...Man United back into EPL’s top four by beating Brentford 1-0

MANCHESTER, England (AP) — Marcus Rashford led Manchester United to its first Premier League win in six weeks as Erik ten Hag’s team overcame Brentford 1-0 to move back into the top four on Wednesday.Winning the English League Cup in February underlined the progress overseen by Ten Hag this season, but United has failed to win any of its three league matches since the victory at Wembley.A meek defeat at Newcastle on Sunday led Ten Hag to once again publicly question his players’ hunger, but United showed more character three days later to edge out Brentford in the pouring rain at Old Trafford.Rashford struck the first-half winner from the impressive Marcel Sabitzer’s knockdown, putting the hosts on course for just their fourth Premier League win in 10 matches.United dropped off after the break as Brentford bounced back from a subdued first-half display, but Thomas Frank’s team was unable to eke out an equalizer.David De Gea spread himself to block substitute Kevin Schade’s effort as...Bryce Harper takes on-field BP for 1st time since surgery

NEW YORK (AP) — Bryce Harper has taken on-field batting practice for the first time since Tommy John surgery last fall.Harper hit on the field before Tuesday night’s game at Yankee Stadium.“He feels great. It’s not hitting we’re concerned about, it’s sliding,” Phillies manager Rob Thomson said Wednesday. ”We got to get clearance from the doctor on that one first ’cause if he slides headfirst he could rupture, and we’re back to square one.”Harper, a two-time National League MVP, was operated on last Nov. 23. A right-handed thrower and left-handed batter, he was projected to return as a designated hitter by the All-Star break. Harper appears to be on track for an earlier return, and Philadelphia has hm on the 10-day injured list rather than the 60, which would have ruled him out until May 29.“He feels like his right arm is stronger than his left right now because he’s done so much rehab on it,” Thomson said.___AP MLB: https://apnews.com/hub/mlb and https://twitter.co...Cole outpitches Nola, Yankees win 4-2 as Phils fall to 1-5

A South Miami-Dade couple was stunned when they found a dog that was abandoned and alone on their property. Now, they want to know who dumped the puppy at their doorstep. Speaking with 7News on Wednesday, Jennifer Thompson said the German shepherd puppy was abandoned and tied to a fence outside her home with a 3-inch leash. “The dog was out there for about 16 hours before we even found it,” she said. “I’ve been gone for a few days. What if I stayed for a week? She would have been dead.”Thompson’s home surveillance cameras were rolling when a white pickup truck drove by along the 16000 block of Southwest 256th Street, just after 6 p.m., Tuesday. The driver appeared to look up the driveway. The truck then came back, stopped, and a man in a blue shirt popped the tailgate. He led the pup off the truck bed and took off. The puppy was seen chasing after them, but at some point, just past the hedges, someone got out and tied the German shepherd to the fence.Th...TikTok banned across Florida universities, including FIU, FAU
