Michael Conforto placed on IL, SF Giants recall Heliot Ramos SAN FRANCISCO — The San Francisco Giants placed outfielder Michael Conforto on the injured list with a Grade 2 left hamstring strain, the team announced.Recently-optioned outfielder Heliot Ramos was recalled from Triple-A Sacramento as the corresponding roster move. When asked about a potential timeline for Conforto’s return, manager Gabe Kapler said he was “optimistic” that Conforto will return this season, adding they expect he’ll miss several weeks to recover from a Grade 2 strain. Conforto, 30, suffered the injury playing in the outfield during Wednesday’s game against the Phillies in Philadelphia. That left hamstring troubled Conforto in June as he’s put together a mediocre first season with the Giants, batting .251/.343/.405 with 12 doubles and 15 home runs.Kapler said Ramos, 23, was disappointed when optioned last week to make room for top pitching prospect Kyle Harrison, adding he had no major advice to hand down for things to work on....

49ers trade Trey Lance to Dallas Cowboys for fourth-round pick SANTA CLARA — Trey Lance is off the 49ers, and onto the rival Dallas Cowboys.Lance, drafted No. 3 overall in 2021 after a massive trade up to that perch, got dealt for a fourth-round draft pick, a team source confirmed less than three hours before kickoff of the 49ers’ preseason finale.Lance’s exit comes just two days after coach Kyle Shanahan informed him that Sam Darnold would be the top backup this season to Brock Purdy. The 49ers’ trading partner comes as a bit of a surprise, on multiple levels. One, it’s the Cowboys, and the 49ers can only hope this trade does not backfire the way an August 1992 deal did, in which Charles Haley was sent to Dallas (for 1993 second- and 1994 third-round picks) to help buoy the Cowboys’ Super Bowl runs. (Disclaimer: Whereas Lance was beloved by coaches other than from a depth-point standpoint, Haley’s volatility toward then-coach George Seifert necessitated his exit.)Second, Dallas has invested heavily in Da...

DC Auditor report says half a billion in federal COVID money was spent without approval In a new report, D.C.’s chief auditor points to failures in how nearly half a billion dollars in federal COVID-19 relief funds were appropriated without the required approval by the city council. In a 52-page report released Thursday, the Office of the District of Columbia Auditor (ODCA) said that while Mayor Muriel Bowser’s Administration had complied with federal requirements on how the 2020 CARES Act funds could be spent, the $495 million in relief was appropriated without approval from the D.C. Council.D.C. Auditor Kathy Patterson told WTOP that skipping that approval process “is in fact a violation of the Home Rule Act, which is our Constitution, congressionally enacted almost 50 years ago.”In addition, Patterson said that D.C.’s Chief Financial Officer failed to exercise his independent role when the appropriation went from the U.S. Treasury to D.C.’s treasury — without the council’s approval.“An independent CFO was one of the che...
