DENVER (KDVR) — The city of Denver is making major changes to how long certain migrants will be allowed to stay in city-run shelters. Previously, migrants with children were allowed to stay for 37 days, but that policy has been paused, at least for now."We're seeing children on the street, and nobody wants to see children on the street," said Jon Ewing, with Denver Human Services. "What we did was we paused discharges for all families, and we actually told families who had timed out to come back inside."Ewing and Denver Human Services say the decision was not an easy one and comes with some compromise. To make room for the additional families, individuals without kids are now only allowed to stay for 14 days, instead of the previous 21.“It’s a hard decision," Ewing said. "Everything we’re talking about involves compromise and tough decisions, and we do not make them lightly." LONDON — As David Cameron heads to Washington this week for his first big speech back on the world stage, his bête noire Boris Johnson will be sat in a dingy room in west London.Johnson is to give two days of televised testimony before Britain’s COVID-19 inquiry, answering a barrage of questions under oath about decisions he took while prime minister in 2020 and 2021 which — many believe — cost thousands of people their lives. As Johnson battles to salvage his battered reputation, Cameron will be strutting through America in a ministerial motorcade, glad-handing Washington’s power players and preparing to address the Aspen Security Forum as U.K. foreign secretary. It’s a stark symbol of just how quickly the political sands can shift. Cameron had long been written out of the British political scene, famously retreating to a hut in his garden to write his memoirs after calling — and losing — the divisive Brexit referendum in 2016. Johnson — an old acquaintance from...A fixation on death tolls can be a fatal distraction

Clionadh Raleigh is President and CEO of the Armed Conflict Location & Event Data Project. When Hamas fighters attacked Israel on October 7, they didn’t just target Israeli army bases or civilian towns and homes. They also struck a weak spot in the popular perception of war: a global fixation on fatality figures.Hamas’ apparent order of the day — to kill and capture as many Israelis as possible, whether military or civilian – was a terrorist act by any definition, and its brutality multiplied the shock. However, it would be a mistake to call this nihilism, as United States President Joe Biden did in an editorial. For as both Biden and Hamas know, in many cases, people only notice a conflict when struck by a death toll.I say this because it’s my job to count. It was the astonishing unreliability of fatality statistics that years ago coaxed me to start collecting data on political violence in six African countries. The Armed Conflict Location & Event Data Project (ACLED), which...Latest news
