Hong Kong (CNN) — Better cancer treatments, advances in longevity, groundbreaking medicines and vaccines: these are just some of the potential prizes on offer in an emerging global race to advance the biosciences. And China has been pouring billions of dollars into its efforts to become the preeminent force, with experts claiming its massive population of 1.4 billion people can provide a treasure trove of data.Vast amounts of this data already exists in biobanks and research centers around the country – but the government is now launching a “national genetic survey” to collect information about and assert more oversight over these resources, say experts. In recent years, authorities have also been tightening controls around foreign access to this data – in contrast to the many Western nations that have pledged to open up information for global sharing. The national survey and restrictions on foreign access are part of new regulations on China’s genetic resources, which came into e...Judge hits 464-foot homer, Yankees beat Marlins 9-4 in series opener

The first time Lionel Richie and Earth, Wind & Fire played together, way back in the ’70s, they packed an arena. The last time Richie and Earth, Wind & Fire played together, Friday night at the TD Garden, well, they packed an arena.Back in the day, Earth, Wind and Fire were untouchable – the sharpest, coolest, most pop savvy of the funk kings. Richie was with the Commodores and not yet the breakout star. Now Richie is the bigger icon – with the closing spot on the duel headlining bill – but not much else has changed.Earth, Wind & Fire started the night bright, bold, loud, proud, funky, freaky, and fabulous. And that just describes their threads. Hey EFW, the ’70s called, the decade wants you to know it’s positively thrilled with your look, and sound, and energy, and vibe, and horn section. Everything was going well for Tylor Megill until it wasn’t.The Mets were routed by the Atlanta Braves 7-0 in the first game of a three-game series Friday night at Citi Field. Megill, the right-hander who has confounded the Mets with his struggles this season, was responsible for six of those runs (five earned) in his sixth loss of the season (6-6).However, the loss can’t fully be blamed on Megill. There were defensive miscues behind the big righty and there were empty at-bats against Charlie Morton and the NL-best Braves.Megill cruised through the first three innings, looking more like the pitcher that won his first three decisions of the season and less like the one that was demoted to Triple-A in June. But then he loaded the bases with two outs in the fourth and Brandon Nimmo misplayed a fly ball from Eddie Rosario in center field. Rosario’s single cleared the bases. Megill then gave up a single, an RBI double and another single before the first out — an ou...Chris Sale practically perfect in first game back from injury, Sox defeat Tigers
