The mother of the bride had just unwound with a change of clothes and a glass of wine on her short-term rental’s balcony when the sound of sirens gave the first impression that her daughter’s wedding night had gone awry.Within minutes, Lisa Miller was riding with her new in-laws to the South Carolina beach road where authorities say a woman driving under the influence at twice the speed limit slammed into the golf cart escorting a happy couple away from their sparkler-filled goodbye at a reception overlooking the Atlantic shoreline.A day that had begun blissfully with charcuterie and mimosas along the beach ended with hours spent in agony outside a hospital where she had wrongly been told her daughter had been taken. Then, Lisa Miller said she learned that the bride’s father had identified the body back at the crash site.Samantha Miller, 34, died Friday in Folly Beach, South Carolina, while still wearing her wedding dress. DENVER (AP) — Colorado Rockies right-hander Germán Márquez will have Tommy John surgery and miss the remainder of the season, the pitcher told reporters on Tuesday. The surgery has not been scheduled as of yet.Márquez left last Wednesday’s start at Cleveland after feeling a sharp pain in his elbow in the bottom of the fourth inning on his 58th pitch of the game. He was making his first start since April 10, when he left an outing against St. Louis with right forearm tightness and went on the 15-day injured list the next day.An MRI after the team returned from Cleveland did not reveal any structural damage but more testing showed he needs surgery.“I was hoping for the best but instinctively I knew,” manager Bud Black said.Márquez is 2-2 with a 4.95 ERA in four starts this season and is two strikeouts shy of tying Jorge De La Rosa for Colorado’s franchise record of 985.He was an NL All-Star in 2021 when the game was played at Coors Field in Denver. Too few nurses are caring for too few patients at local hospitals — that’s the concern of the Prince George’s County, Maryland, council. On Tuesday, members passed a resolution that would allow the county’s health board to study nurse-to-patient ratios.“They’re overworked,” Council Vice Chair Wala Blegay said. “When a family member comes and says, ‘I took my mother to the Capitol Regional Hospital, and then I didn’t see the nurse and nobody came,’ and all that. That’s because of nurses overwhelmed.”Blegay sponsored the resolution for the health board to collect empirical data that involves nurse and support staff ratio, and how it would also affect patient care within the county.“Where will the nurses come from to implement the goal of this resolution?” Council member Calvin Hawkins said before voting for the resolution. “And is there a risk this could result in fewer health care services for Prince George’s County residents if st...Extra paid sick leave for COVID-19 to end soon

DENVER (KDVR) — The public health emergency is coming to an end, and so is a benefit that helps workers get paid through a case of COVID-19.Colorado has required paid sick leave for all employees since 2021, when the Colorado Healthy Families and Workplaces Act took effect. The law also requires up to 80 hours of additional paid sick leave during a public health emergency, like the COVID-19 pandemic. But that stage is coming to a close in the U.S., with the federal public health emergency to end on May 11. Colorado's emergency declaration will also end, the governor's office has said. So what does that mean for workers who need to use PHE leave for a COVID-related absence? Why you need to slow down to 20 mph on some Denver roads PHE leave applies not only to confirmed COVID cases but to related needs like testing, vaccination or caring for a family member. When the PHE ends, the benefit will not disappear right away.Employees can still use PHE leave for another four weeks after bot...Embiid tops Jokic to win 1st MVP trophy

DETROIT — Max Scherzer was hoping to return from his 10-game sticky substance suspension to face the Atlanta Braves. He dropped his appeal to MLB in part to be able to face an important division rival. But the weather didn’t cooperate and one of the Mets’ games against the Braves was postponed until August because of rain. Scherzer was just one game too short. And while he’s happy to be making his return in Detroit, where he turned into one of the game’s premier aces, it’s still not quite the same as facing a rival.“I’d rather face a division opponent,” Scherzer said Tuesday afternoon at Comerica Park. “It’s fun to face a division opponent. I get it. It’s fun to face them, the Braves are good. I can beat them, they can beat me. We’ve had good matchups with them over the years. So you won’t always want to go out there and face your division foe.”The Detroit Tigers (10-17) don’t exactly pose...Being high on crack not grounds for new trial after Peabody double-murder: SJC

Being high on crack when he blasted a man in the face with a shotgun and stabbed a woman more than 20 times is not an acceptable excuse for a new trial, the state’s highest court ruled.“The jury convicted the defendant of murder in the first degree on the theory of premeditation as to both victims, and on the theory of extreme atrocity or cruelty,” SJC Associate Justice Dalila Argaez Wendlandt wrote in the ruling released Tuesday. The state Supreme Judicial Court ruled that Wes Doughty’s guilty verdict for the 2017 murder of Mark Greenlaw and Jennifer O’Connor inside a Peabody home used as a crack cocaine distribution hub stands.“We affirm the convictions and discern no reason to grant relief,” the SJC wrote.Doughty, Wendlandt stated, was a daily visitor to the house to both smoke cocaine and also take part in caring for the home’s disabled proprietor, David Moise, who required assistance both “eating and toileting.” Doughty was so close, she added, that he was known to c...Latest news
