With regional pride on the line at the 2023 Massachusetts State Hockey Coaches Assocation Senior Girl’s All-Star Game, the North Team struck early and ran away with a 5-1 victory over the South. The game featured many of the top senior players in the state, some of whom just came off of state championships the week before.“It was a nice opportunity for these girls to get a chance to spend some time with other kids,” South team and Archbishop Williams coach Doug Nolan said. “It was nice for these girls to be a part of something like thisThe North team came out with a purpose, carrying play in the first period and limiting South to just three shots. The opening goal came after a great breakout pass from St. Mary’s standout Jenna Chaplain to HPNA’s Kaitlyn Bush led to a cross-crease pass to St. Mary’s Amanda Forziati, who fired the puck into the back of the net.Moments later, Winthrop’s Emily Holmes connected with her sister Julia Holmes for the second North goal.“It’s natural at this p...UK report: Black kids 6 times likelier to be strip-searched

LONDON (AP) — Black children in England and Wales were six times more likely to be strip-searched by police, according to a report being released Monday that found children were failed by those sworn to protect them. Children’s Commissioner Rachel de Souza found nearly 3,000 children were strip-searched between 2018 and mid-2022 and more than half the searches were conducted without an appropriate adult present. The investigation was launched after a Black 15-year-old girl suspected of having marijuana was strip-searched at a London school in 2020 by two female officers without another adult present. The girl, identified as “Child Q,” was menstruating and no drugs were found. A previous report said racism was a likely factor for the humiliating search.“The bravery of a girl to speak up about a traumatic thing that happened to her” led to the report that found “widespread noncompliance” of safeguards and evidence of a “deeply concerning practice,” de Souza said. KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KXAN) — He's still the interim head coach for the Texas Longhorns, and during the postgame press conference following his team's 88-81 loss to Miami in the Elite 8, Rodney Terry was emotional when talking about this year's team.Terry stepped into the head coaching role following Chris Beard's suspension and eventual firing, and his presence helped keep the team together. His coaching took them to a place the program hasn't been in 15 years. Texas Longhorns lose double-digit lead, fall to Miami Hurricanes 88-81 in Elite 8 Since taking over Dec. 12, Terry led the Longhorns to a 22-8 record and their first appearance in the Sweet 16 since 2008. A win over Xavier put the Longhorns in their first Elite Eight since the same season, and they nearly made it to their first Final Four in 20 years. The Sporting News named Terry its national coach of the year this season even though he wasn't selected as the Big 12's coach of the year.Near the end of the postgame news confer...Family, community remember couple killed by wrong-way driver in Chino Hills

The crash happened on Mar. 19, at around 2:30 a.m., in the southbound lanes of the 71 Freeway near the Central Avenue exits. According to California Highway Patrol, several people called 911 to report a driver traveling northbound in the southbound lanes. The collision, involving four to five vehicles, occurred moments later, officers told news photographers at the scene. CHP said a sergeant who was first to arrive on the scene tried to rescue several people trapped inside a burning white sedan, but they were forced to back away because of the intense flames. Four people inside that vehicle were later pronounced dead. Another person was transported to a local hospital in an unknown condition. SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — North Korea fired two short-range ballistic missiles into its eastern waters Monday, continuing its weapons displays as the United States moved an aircraft carrier strike group to neighboring waters for military exercises with the South. South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff said the two missiles were fired from a western inland area south of the North Korean capital of Pyongyang from around 7:47 a.m. to 8 a.m. and traveled around 370 kilometers (229 miles) before landing at sea. Japan’s military said the missiles flew on an “irregular” trajectory and reached a maximum altitude of 50 kilometers (31 miles) before landing outside Japan’s exclusive economic zone. Japan has previously used the term to describe a North Korean solid-fuel missile apparently modeled after Russia’s Iskander mobile ballistic system, which is designed to be maneuverable in low-altitude flight to better evade South Korean missile defenses. The launches came a day before the American airc...Reese, LSU women push past Miami 54-42 to reach Final Four

GREENVILLE, S.C. (AP) — Angel Reese had 18 rebounds and LSU returned to the women’s Final Four for the first time in 15 years by beating Miami 54-42 on Sunday night, carrying a rapid rise under second-year coach Kim Mulkey straight to the sport’s biggest stage.Alexis Morris scored 21 points and Reese added 13 for the third-seeded Tigers (32-2), who asserted control of a grinding, defense-first game. LSU’s length caused Miami problems even with Reese — an Associated Press first-team All-American — having a brutal shooting day, and the Tigers offset their offensive hiccups by dominating the glass.LSU shot 30.2% and went 1 for 12 from 3-point range, including misses on its first nine attempts. But Miami was even worse from 3, missing all 15 tries. The third-seeded Tigers finished with a 49-35 rebounding edge behind Reese, which led to a 15-3 edge in second-chance points — all desperately needed on a day with offensive rebounds readily available.Mulkey is in her second ...Boutier beats Hall in playoff to claim 3rd LPGA victory

GOLD CANYON, Ariz. (AP) — Celine Boutier beat Georgia Hall with a birdie on the first playoff hole Sunday to win the LPGA Drive on Championship.Boutier forced a playoff by making a testy birdie putt at the par-5 18th to close out a 4-under 68, matching Hall (65) at 20-under 268 in the LPGA’s first full-field event of the season.Playing the 18th hole again, neither golfer found the green with their second shot of the playoff. Boutier, chipping from nearly the same spot as she did in regulation short and right of the green, pitched to about 4 feet. Meanwhile, Hall hit her second shot into a greenside bunker, blasted beyond the hole and failed to convert her birdie effort. That set the stage for Boutier’s winning birdie putt. With the victory, the 29-year-old Boutier claimed her third LPGA victory and became the winningest French player on tour, moving past Patricia Meunier-Lebouc and Anne-Marie Palli. KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Jordan Miller and Isaiah Wong rallied Miami from a 13-point second-half deficit, Norchad Omier made two big free throws and an even more important steal down the stretch, and the fifth-seeded Hurricanes stunned No. 2 seed Texas 88-81 on Sunday to reach the Final Four for the first time in school history.Miller finished with 27 points, going 7 of 7 from the field and 13 of 13 from the foul line, while Wong scored 12 of his 14 points in the second half to beat the Longhorns, who had been the top remaining seed in a topsy-turvy NCAA Tournament. After falling short in the Elite Eight a year ago, the fifth-seeded Hurricanes (29-7) won the Midwest Region and are headed to NRG Stadium in Houston for a date with No. 4 seed UConn on Saturday night. It’s the first time since seeding began in 1979 that no team seeded better than No. 4 made the Final Four, so perhaps it is fitting that Miami coach Jim Larrañaga is involved. He took George Mason there as an 11 seed in 2006....Latest news
