Hays County elementary school closed for one week due to mold discovery

HAYS COUNTY, Texas (KXAN) -- Hemphill Elementary School in Hays County is closed through Nov. 8 after mold was discovered in 13 classrooms, the Hays Consolidated Independent School District said in a news release.This comes after a "concern about a mold smell in a classroom" at the elementary, the district said. An air quality test was able to confirm the discovery of the mold, and mitigation crews began working to remove the mold from the classroom, according to Hays CISD.The air quality test "revealed the initial classroom had elevated levels of Aspergillus/Penicillium," which can affect people with "weakened immune systems or cause allergies," according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.On Wednesday, crews found at least 13 classrooms were "affected in areas behind the walls from the floors up to about three feet above the floors," the district said. HAYS COUNTY, Texas (KXAN) — The Hays County Sheriff's Office is seeking volunteers and holiday elf volunteers as part of its Brown Santa program, the department shared in a Facebook post Thursday.The program's annual holiday drive collects money, food and toy donations to help families in need countywide. The program comprises both HCSO staff members along with community volunteers, per the post.More than 650 families received food and toy donations collected last year, officials noted. For toy donations, collections appropriate for those ages 16 and younger will be accepted. AUSTIN (KXAN) — Austin Independent School District will roll out a new enrollment system to assist in the registration process ahead of the 2024-25 school year, according to a newsletter sent to district families Thursday."Enroll Austin" is slated to activate on Nov. 8, per the newsletter. The new system will combine online registration, online student transfer requests, common applications and prekindergarten applications into one platform. (NEWS10)---For several months, Jade Eddy has been sounding the alarm—calling on lawmakers to pass legislation to increase the 3.5 cent handling fee for bottle redemption centers to at least 5 cents to help them stay afloat."The writing is on the wall," said Eddy. Mayor races are on the ballot in four local cities.One of them is Schenectady. Ed Varno is running on the Working Families party line. The former city firefighter got into the race after hearing from residents about their number one issue."It's the neighborhoods I believe have been neglected," said Varno. WAPPINGER'S FALLS, N.Y. (NEWS10) — Officials are investigating an explosion in Dutchess County. They said that a struck gas line caused an explosion, a fire, and the partial collapse of a building in Wappinger's Falls.
