Editorial: Hamas attack should be recognized as an act of terrorism

Editorial: Hamas attack should be recognized as an act of terrorism There should be no debate over the language we use to describe Hamas and its depraved Oct. 7 attack on Israel.Hamas is a terrorist organization, and the acts of its agents on Oct. 7, when they crossed the border into Israel with the express intent of killing and kidnapping civilians, were terrorism. That makes them terrorists. While some have suggested Hamas’ political role in Gaza means it is not a terrorist organization, it is clearly targeting civilians for political ends, which is the very definition of terrorism. The danger in using euphemisms such as “militants” to describe terrorists is that it normalizes heinous acts of terrorism and implies that the deliberate targeting of civilians is a military act and that Hamas at large has some other, less despicable objective. But let’s be clear: Hamas’ stated goal in its founding charter calls for the obliteration of the state of Israel. The United States, the European Union, the United Kingdom and Canada have all formally designated Ham...

80% of new cars and trucks for sale in Colorado would need to be electric by 2032 under new rule Almost every car, SUV and pickup truck for sale in Colorado in less than a decade will be powered by a rechargeable battery if a state agency this week approves a plan to increase the number of electric vehicles on the state’s road. The Colorado Air Quality Control Commission will consider a rule that would require auto manufacturers to make 80% of all new cars for sale in the state have zero emissions by 2032 as part of an effort to clean the state’s polluted air.Cars and trucks on Colorado’s roads are the biggest sources of air pollution in the state, and passenger vehicles represent about 65% of those emissions, said Kelly Blynn, the Colorado Energy Office’s transportation climate change specialist.“Obviously, there’s important air quality and climate benefits,” Blynn said of the proposal to ramp up the sale of electric vehicles. The proposed rule has the support of Gov. Jared Polis, who released a new Colorado Electric Vehicle Plan in Marc...

Chicken Rebel owner replaces LoHi restaurant with coastal brunch spot

Chicken Rebel owner replaces LoHi restaurant with coastal brunch spot Two customers walked into the old Chicken Rebel space in Denver’s Lower Highland last week, craving a fried chicken sandwich, but they were surprised to find an entirely new restaurant. The name and space might have changed, but luckily, owner and chef Lydie Lovett’s “Nashville hot chicken sammie” is still on the menu. She has since replaced Chicken Rebel at 3618 Tejon St. with Wilde, a new coastal brunch spot, which she opened at the start of October.“Where I grew up in San Diego, it’s all community-centric,” Lovett said. “You walk down the street, and you know a bunch of people. There’s a local watering hole, every restaurant makes you feel like family, and I’ve always wanted to re-create that.”Lovett moved to Denver from San Diego with $300 in her pocket and rode the hot chicken sandwich wave, which was very popular in California at the time. Chicken Rebel started as a food truck in 2017 before moving onto a stall in Avanti and eventually a brick-and-mortar space in LoHi in ...

Fights may loom after Denver Mayor Mike Johnston accepts a fraction of City Council’s budget additions

Fights may loom after Denver Mayor Mike Johnston accepts a fraction of City Council’s budget additions The Denver City Council went big when it asked new Mayor Mike Johnston to add more money to next year’s city budget for emergency rental assistance, cash payments for people who are homeless, support for Denver Health and other requests.Johnston has responded by accepting $10.6 million in spending additions — just an eighth of the more than $81 million the body asked for to meet its 2024 priorities in a significant increase from past years. He granted several requests only partially.Multimillion-dollar gaps remain between the council and the mayor as they work to pass a 2024 budget by Nov. 13. The process is giving new officeholders on both sides a lesson in the power dynamics of Denver city government, which favors the mayor on budget matters but gives the council some levers to pull.In coming weeks, the council could attempt to amend the budget to incorporate more of its priorities, while the mayor could veto those changes — at the risk of being overridden, if th...

Lauren Boebert, far behind leading challenger in fundraising, feels squeeze from both sides in 2024 election U.S. Rep. Lauren Boebert is getting squeezed from both sides of the political aisle in the money race as she faces a growing field of challengers hoping to thwart her reelection next year.Third-quarter fundraising totals reported in recent days in Colorado’s 3rd Congressional District show the Republican incumbent was outraised by her most prominent Democratic foe, Adam Frisch, by a factor of 4-to-1. And Jeff Hurd, a Boebert challenger in next year’s GOP primary, posted sizeable totals indicating he also might pose trouble for the two-term congresswoman.Boebert’s haul for the period from July 1 to Sept. 30 was just shy of $854,000, according to the recent campaign finance reports. Earlier this month, ahead of filing his full quarterly report, former Aspen city councilman Frisch, who narrowly lost to Boebert in 2022, touted a nearly $3.4 million haul during the same time frame.Hurd, a Grand Junction attorney, collected just over $412,000 despite launching his campai...
