COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — A network of ancient American Indian ceremonial and burial mounds in Ohio described as “part cathedral, part cemetery and part astronomical observatory” was added Tuesday to the list of UNESCO World Heritage sites. Preservationists, led by the Ohio History Connection, and indigenous tribes, many with ancestral ties to the state, pushed to recognize the Hopewell Ceremonial Earthworks for their good condition, distinct style and cultural significance — describing them as “masterpieces of human genius.” UNESCO’s World Heritage Committee approved the application during a meeting in Saudi Arabia. The massive earthworks join a list of famed sites that includes Greece’s Acropolis, Peru’s Machu Picchu and the Great Wall of China.Constructed by American Indians between 2,000 and 1,600 years ago along central tributaries of the Ohio River, the earthworks were host to ceremonies that drew people from across the continent, based on archeological discoveries of raw material...Israeli military sentences commander to 10 days in prison over shooting of Palestinian motorist

JERUSALEM (AP) — Israel on Tuesday sentenced an army commander in the occupied West Bank to 10 days in military prison after an investigation into his shooting last week of a Palestinian motorist who was found to be innocent. The Israeli military said that security forces stationed at the Israeli settlement of Rimonim, east of Jerusalem, had received reports of gunshots in the area and, sometime later, spotted a Palestinian vehicle fleeing the scene that they believed to be behind the shooting. The forces opened fire at the Palestinian man’s car, the military said, hitting and wounding the driver. The army arrested him and took him to a hospital for treatment before releasing him the next day. An Israeli military investigation determined the army’s shooting was the result of mistaken identity. “This is a serious incident in which the force acted contrary to procedures,” the army said, announcing that the force’s commander had been sentenced to 10 days in military pr...Ukraine intercepts 27 of 30 Russian Shahed drones, sparking inferno at Lviv warehouse and killing 1

KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — Russia launched a massive drone attack on the western city of Lviv early Tuesday, damaging a warehouse facility in a fiery blaze and killing one man, Ukrainian authorities said.Ukraine intercepted 27 of 30 Shahed drones overnight, the Air Force said. But drones that got through air defense systems sparked an inferno at the industrial storage facility that was not used for military purposes, Gov. Maksym Kozytsky said. An artillery strike in Kherson in the south struck a bus, killing a police sergeant and wounding two men, said Ihor Klymenko, Ukraine’s minister of internal affairs. That strike also set a warehouse on fire. The developments in the war front came as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy was in New York to address the U.N. General Assembly and Security Council before going to Washington on Thursday to meet with lawmakers and President Joe Biden.Zelenskyy has continued to drum up funding and support for new weapons as the counteroffensive Ukra...Rudy Giuliani sued by former lawyer over $1.36 million in legal bills

NEW YORK (AP) — Rudy Giuliani's former lawyer sued him Monday, alleging the ex-New York City mayor has paid only a fraction of nearly $1.6 million in legal fees he's racked up from investigations into his efforts to keep Donald Trump in the White House.Robert Costello and his law firm, Davidoff Hutcher & Citron LLP, say Giuliani has paid them just $214,000 and still has a $1.36 million tab. Giuliani’s last payment, according to the lawsuit, was $10,000 on Sept. 14 — about a week after Trump hosted a $100,000-a-plate fundraiser for Giuliani at his Bedminster, New Jersey, golf club.Costello and the firm say Giuliani, once celebrated as “America’s mayor” for his leadership after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, breached his retainer agreement by failing to pay invoices in full in a timely fashion. The lawsuit, filed in state court in Manhattan, seeks full payment of Giuliani’s unpaid bills, as well as costs and fees from their efforts to get him to pay up.“I can’t express how personall...No winner for Powerball; jackpot climbs to $672 million

AUSTIN (KXAN) – Agents with the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission seized an illegal still at a home in north-central Texas on Sept. 1, according to the agency. The agents found the still at a Johnson County home after getting an anonymous tip, the TABC said in Sept. 13 release. Agents from the agency's Arlington Regional Office led the operation. The still could be used to make illicit alcohol in violation of state law, the TABC said. A person living at the home admitted to agents that they owned the still, according to the agency. Possession of illicit distillation equipment is a misdemeanor and the agency said it can be punishable by a fine between $100–$1,000. “This operation exemplifies TABC’s commitment to properly enforcing the law and ensuring the safety and integrity of the alcoholic beverage industry in Texas,” TABC Executive Director Thomas Graham said. “Not only does illicit alcohol risk the health and safety of anyone who consumes it, but it also undermines the efforts ...Black goop clean up: how special gel and paint roller tech could help

AUSTIN (KXAN) - Oil spills have been some of the most impactful environmental disasters in human history. In 2010, the Deepwater Horizon oil spill released over two hundred million gallons into the Gulf of Mexico, turning the sea black for years."(That spill) still has a lasting impact on marine environments," said Guihua Yu, a professor of material science in the Cockrell School of Engineering at the University of Texas in Austin. Texas researchers farm water from thin air Yu said that the Deepwater Horizon spill motivated him to find a solution for clearing up oil spills. More than a decade later, he's developed a new technology that could recover oil from the ocean following an oil spill. The findings, published in Nature Sustainability, used giant rollers coated in a special gel that can absorb oil and reject water. Essentially, they work like paint rollers but instead of spreading the paint they are collecting oil.A heating device atop the roller warms the oil, making it thin ...Hays CISD joins lawsuit against TEA over school rankings

ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- Today's 98.3 TRY Social Dilemma comes from Jeff. His mom is throwing a birthday party for her dog, with a DJ and all, and she's expecting gifts. He doesn't want to bring his family for a number of reasons. He writes: Get the latest news, weather, sports and entertainment delivered right to your inbox! Hi Jaime. I'm in a crazy situation. My mom has a dog, but you’d think she’d given birth to another child. Three years ago, she brought home a pure-bred border collie. The dog is great, and it’s really good for her since she’s alone a lot of the time, but the cries for attention are getting ridiculous. Next weekend, she’s having a third birthday party for “Sasha.” For most normal people, this would mean getting some Frosty Paw frozen treats and calling it a day. Not for mom. She’s inviting everyone she knows and wants it to be a giant celebration…even hiring a DJ…just like she did the two previous years. It’s not like we don’t spend time with mom once a week, ...Latest news
