Alberta officials say cooler weather and showers help in battle against wildfires EDMONTON — Cooler temperatures and a bit of rain were delivering some relief for firefighters as they continued to battle wildfires that threaten communities in northern Alberta, but provincial officials warned the reprieve was only in some areas and lightning is sparking some new blazes.“People have called this season certainly unprecedented in recent memory because we have so many fires so spread out,” Christie Tucker with Alberta Wildfire told a media briefing Sunday afternoon.“It’s been an unusual year.”The province said Sunday there were 108 active fires and the number of evacuees grew to about 29,000, up from approximately 24,000 the day before.Tucker said 31 of the 108 fires are classified as out-of-control, and while weather conditions were improving somewhat in southern and central areas, including some showers as far north as Fox Creek, areas further north weren’t as lucky.A provincewide state of emergency was declared Saturday.“Th...

Pro-Biden groups spend $20M+ to promote record ahead of ’24 WASHINGTON (AP) — Three progressive groups are spending more than $20 million in a new national ad campaign to promote President Joe Biden’s record as he begins his 2024 reelection race. The ads from the groups Future Forward USA Action, Climate Power and Way to Win Action Fund, first shared with The Associated Press, aim to sell voters on Biden’s efforts to lower the cost of prescription drugs, create clean energy jobs, and support the middle class as inflation takes a bite out of their take-home pay. The groups aim to remind Americans of what Biden has done in office, as many Democrats believe their party has not done enough to educate voters about what they have accomplished after 28 months in power.“The Biden-Harris Administration has a good story to tell, and we’re making people aware of the real difference these policies will make in their everyday lives,” Chauncey McLean, the president of Future Forward USA Action, said in a statement. “This national advertising an...

Aussie Slingsby beats Kiwi rival Burling in $1M SailGP final Tom Slingsby of Team Australia held on through a few tense moments after his catamaran fell off its foils and then prevailed over rival Peter Burling of New Zealand in a short dash to the finish to claim his third straight $1 million, winner-take-all SailGP season championship Sunday on San Francisco Bay.Slingsby, who has dominated tech tycoon Larry Ellison’s global league since it debuted in 2019, dodged what could have been a huge embarrassment when he recovered and kept his 50-foot Flying Roo — nicknamed for the giant yellow kangaroo on the wingsail — ahead of Burling for the thrilling victory. British star Sir Ben Ainslie finished a distant third in the Grand Final.“That was not the plan. I thought we lost it,” a relieved Slingsby said right after the race. “We had it the whole way. That was crazy. I was very scared. I was thinking this could be the biggest choke of all time right now, but fortunately we were able to get it over the line. What a race.”Slingsby and his four...

Bart’s homer: Colon marks unexpected blast with first pitch NEW YORK (AP) — Bartolo Colon celebrated the seventh anniversary of his unlikely homer by doing something perhaps more unexpected: bouncing a ceremonial first pitch.Colon, renowned far more for his pinpoint control than his bat throughout a 21-year big league career, tossed a first pitch to Francisco Lindor that bounced just shy of home plate at Citi Field before the New York Mets’ 13-6 loss to Colorado on Sunday.Colon, who last pitched in the big leagues in 2018 and turns 50 on May 24, laughed and later hugged Rockies manager Bud Black, his pitching coach when Colon won the AL Cy Young Award for the Angels in 2005.Prior to the first pitch, the crowd of 36,501 offered a warm ovation as the Mets aired a clip of Colon’s homer, a 365-foot shot off San Diego’s James Shields. At just shy of 43 years old, Colon was the oldest player to hit his first career homer. It was one of just five extra-base hits he delivered in a career in which he hit .084 in 299 at-bats.He played for the Met...
