MassDOT expects to deploy more than 3,000 pieces of equipment during late season nor’easter

The Massachusetts Department of Transportation expects to deploy about 3,000 pieces of equipment during Tuesday’s daylong nor’easter, according to Highway Administrator Jonathan Gulliver. As of 7 a.m., MassDOT already has over 500 pieces of equipment deployed and is updating those numbers quickly.“These late season storms are really tough,” Gulliver said. “When you’re looking out the window and you’re looking at rain, you’re thinking this is going to be easy. It’s not, this is going to deteriorate very quickly as the temperature drops and the snowfall starts.” Gulliver said one of the biggest challenges with storms that start with rain is the roads cannot be pretreated. “When it starts raining and you have warm roadways, pretreatment is ineffective, and that means that when the snow really hits it’s going to ice up very quickly. McConnell released from hospital, headed to inpatient rehab

WASHINGTON (AP) — Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell was released from the hospital Monday after treatment for a concussion and will continue to recover in an inpatient rehabilitation facility, a spokesman said.McConnell’s office said his doctors discovered over the weekend that he had also suffered a “minor rib fracture” after he tripped and fell at the Waldorf Astoria hotel in Washington on Wednesday evening.“Leader McConnell’s concussion recovery is proceeding well and the Leader was discharged from the hospital today,” McConnell spokesman David Popp said in a statement. “At the advice of his physician, the next step will be a period of physical therapy at an inpatient rehabilitation facility before he returns home.”The office did not give any additional detail on his condition or say how long McConnell will be out. ATLANTA (AP) — A former Georgia sheriff convicted of violating the civil rights of people in his custody by unnecessarily strapping them into restraint chairs is set to be sentenced Tuesday with prosecutors seeking several years in prison.A jury in October convicted Victor Hill — who was sheriff of Clayton County, just south of Atlanta — on six of seven federal charges against him. Prosecutors recommended in a sentencing memo filed with the court that he serve three years and 10 months in prison, while defense attorneys are asking for a sentence of probation, home confinement and a fine.His trial included about a week of testimony from more than three dozen witnesses, including the men who were restrained.
