Ex-Tokyo Olympics official pleads not guilty to taking bribes in exchange for Games contracts

TOKYO (AP) — Haruyuki Takahashi, a former member of the Tokyo Olympic organizing committee, appeared in a Tokyo district court on Thursday and pleaded not guilty to taking bribes tied to the Games.Takahashi was arrested more than a year ago and its unclear when his trial will end.The defense will present its case early next year.A former executive with the powerful Japanese advertising company Dentsu, Takahashi is charged with accepting around 198 million yen ($1.4 million) in bribes in exchange for awarding Olympic contracts for the 2021 Tokyo Games.Takahashi appeared in court just nine days after a separate bid-rigging trial was adjourned with Dentsu and five other companies facing criminal charges. (CNN) — The Senate voted on Wednesday to pass a critical defense policy bill known as the National Defense Authorization Act, which sets the policy agenda and authorizes funding for the Department of Defense annually.The final negotiated version of the NDAA for fiscal year 2024 authorizes $886 billion in national defense funding, an increase of $28 billion over last year.It is expected to be approved by the Senate with bipartisan support and would next go to the House, with lawmakers hoping it will pass through both chambers before the end of the week. Two transported to hospital after 3-alarm fire in Orange, house a total loss

Two people were rushed to the hospital after being rescued from a three-alarm fire in Orange Thursday morning.Fire crews arrived at the house on West River Street just after midnight, battling the blaze for over three hours.Two residents who were trapped inside the home were located and removed by firefighters before being transported to local hospitals. Three animals, also trapped inside, were removed safely.Orange Fire Chief James Young said the house was a “total loss” from the fire.

WSJ reporter Gershkovich to remain in detention until end of January after court rejects his appeal

MOSCOW (AP) — Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich, arrested in Russia on espionage charges, lost an appeal on Thursday to be released from jail and will remain in custody at least until Jan. 30. Gershkovich, 32, was detained in March while on a reporting trip to the Russian city of Yekaterinburg, about 2,000 kilometers (1,200 miles) east of Moscow. Russia’s Federal Security Service alleged that the reporter, “acting on the instructions of the American side, collected information constituting a state secret about the activities of one of the enterprises of the Russian military-industrial complex.” He has been behind bars ever since.
