Karl Mathiesen is the senior climate correspondent at POLITICO Europe.Saturday was the hottest day of the year in London. I was celebrating a recent return to the United Kingdom with a boisterous, sweaty family dinner that went late into the early hours of the morning.Unbeknownst to us, just outside our door, someone was bleeding. As our guests set out, stumbling home through the tropical night, they met a police officer who told them they could cross over the crime scene barrier, so long as they stepped around the trail of blood. And on Monday morning, on the walk to my daughter’s new school, it was still there — 100 meters of little brown blotches, spiked like coronavirus cells, baked into the pavement.Saturday was the sixth day in a row that London had experienced temperatures above 30 degrees Celsius. Climate change played a role in this heat. But was it just a coincidence that this sign of violence appeared on our street on the hottest day of what is shaping ...Cross-border police chase ends with shooting in Providence

(CNN) — A dramatic and complex international rescue operation to save an American man from one of Turkey’s deepest caves ended successfully on Tuesday – more than a week after after he fell seriously ill and became too frail to make his own way out.An accomplished and experienced caver, Mark Dickey, 40, had been part of a research group on an exploration mission in the Morca Cave when he reportedly began suffering from gastrointestinal bleeding. The cave is located in the Taurus Mountain range in southern Turkey and reaches depths of up to 1,276 meters (4,186 feet).A huge rescue effort was launched involving multiple teams of experienced cavers from around the world alongside Turkish specialists.“Mark Dickey is out in the hands of a rescue worker (and) seems fine at first look,” Recep Salci of Turkey’s disaster and emergency management authority (AFAD) said on Tuesday as footage emerged of Dickey being stretchered out of the cave with a grin on his face.Speaking near the ca...Foxboro defense puts up a wall to shut out North Attleboro, 14-0

NORTH ATTLEBORO – It takes a lot of discipline to shut out an offense like North Attleboro, especially at home.Foxboro forced a couple of timely turnovers along with a couple of key fourth down stops to blank the Red Rocketeers 14-0 at North Attleboro High on Friday night.“(North Attleboro) was very difficult to prepare for because they showed about every offensive set you can run in football,” said Foxboro coach Jack Martinelli. After a scoreless first quarter, Foxboro (2-0) came up with a stop in the red zone as North Attleboro (1-1) turned the ball over on downs at the Warriors’ 14-yard line.Just three plays later, junior Ben Angelini took it to the house from 69 yards out after breaking through the secondary to give Foxboro the 7-0 lead with 4:41 left in the first half.“Play calling and getting North Attleboro to jump offsides, that helped a lot,” Angelini said about the team’s ability to control the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball. “It’s definitely our blocks and get...Prosecutors seek narrow gag order on Trump in federal election case after ‘inflammatory’ comments

By ERIC TUCKER (Associated Press)WASHINGTON (AP) — Federal prosecutors are seeking an order that would prevent Donald Trump from making “inflammatory” and “intimidating” comments about witnesses, lawyers and other people involved in the criminal case charging the former president with scheming to overturn the 2020 presidential election.Special counsel Jack Smith’s team said in a motion filed Friday that such a “narrow, well-defined” order was necessary to preserve the integrity of the case and to avoid prejudicing potential jurors. Prosecutors had foreshadowed for weeks their concerns about Trump’s verbal attacks, but Friday’s request marks the first time they have proposed formal action to rein in speech that they say risks tainting the case and causing court workers and witnesses to live in fear of being targeted. The motion lays out what prosecutors say is a pattern of “false and inflammatory” statements abou...Orioles dominated by Rays, 7-1, as Baltimore falls into tie for AL East lead with 4th straight loss

Tampa Bay Rays pinch-hitter Harold Ramírez launched a ball to left field, then flipped his bat. Like the Orioles, both came falling back to earth. The three-run home run broke open what became a 7-1 victory for Tampa Bay, erasing Baltimore’s lead in the American League East and leaving the teams tied atop the division with two games left in their weekend series and about two weeks left in the regular season. In another bereft night for the offense, the Orioles recorded only two hits. The first did not come until the sixth inning, when rookie Heston Kjerstad launched a home run for his first career hit. It’s the first time the Orioles (91-56) haven’t stood alone atop the AL East since July 21, when they suffered their lone loss in a four-game series at Tampa Bay. They entered Sunday with a four-game lead on the Rays, but Baltimore has since tied a season high with four straight losses, including dropping the first two games in their home series with Tampa Bay.Frid...Latest news
