The 2023 Orioles have shown a knack for early success. They continued it Thursday by coming through late.Baltimore rallied with five runs in the seventh inning to defeat the Detroit Tigers, 7-4, to open a four-game series and 10-game road trip. The victory improved the Orioles to 9-0 in series openers, and at 17-8, they have the most wins before the end of April of any team in franchise history. These Orioles are the seventh iteration to win at least 17 of their first 25 games, with the club’s 1966 and 1970 World Series champions among the previous six.It appeared for much of Thursday’s contest they would not join those ranks. Kyle Gibson provided the shortest of his six starts as an Oriole, giving up three runs in 4 1/3 innings. After Baltimore got two runs back when Joey Ortiz — the organization’s No. 7 prospect promoted before Thursday’s game — hit a two-run single for his first major league knock in the fifth, the Tigers (9-15) doubled the marg...Yankees Notebook: Aaron Judge leaves game vs. Texas Rangers with right hip discomfort

ARLINGTON — Aaron Judge left Thursday’s game against the Texas Rangers with an injury — but not the one he suffered on an awkward slide a day earlier. The Yankees slugger departed in the fourth inning with right hip discomfort and was replaced in right field by Oswaldo Cabrera. Judge got the start after rolling up on his right hand in Wednesday’s win over the Minnesota Twins.Judge and manager Aaron Boone both expressed confidence before Thursday’s game after the Yankees captain managed to remain in Wednesday’s contest following the hand injury.Boone had said before the game he’d consider resting Judge at some point during the four-game set in Arlington.“I considered giving him a day today, and I might in this series, but no, after talking through it with him and the trainers, and then once he was all right today, no, I feel good about it,” Boone said.Asked about the status of his hand before the game, Judge replied, “Yeah, w...NFL Draft 2023: Patriots select elite cornerback with 17th overall pick

TAIPEI, Taiwan (AP) — China’s military flew 38 fighter jets and other warplanes near Taiwan, the Taiwanese defense ministry said Friday, in the largest such flight display since the large military exercise in which it simulated sealing off the island earlier in the month. Six navy vessels were also spotted in the area from 6 a.m. Thursday to 6 a.m. Friday as part of China’s long-running campaign of intimidation against the self-ruled island democracy that Beijing claims as part of its territory.Nineteen of the aircraft flew across the midline in the Taiwan Strait that separates the island from the mainland, the ministry said. It said they included five SU-30 and two J-16 aircraft. One drone, a TB-001, circled the island, according to a diagram from the Defense Ministry.China held exercises simulating the sealing off the island after the sensitive meeting April 5 between Taiwan’s President Tsai Ing-wen and U.S. House Speaker Kevin McCarthy in California. ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — Judges in New York will have more discretion to jail people awaiting trial for alleged crimes, Gov. Kathy Hochul announced Thursday night, a policy change fiercely resisted by some of her fellow Democrats. The governor held a state Capitol news conference to announce that a “conceptual agreement” had been reached on a $229 billion budget with the state Legislature, a deal that still needs to be approved by lawmakers. The budget includes policy proposals ranging from a minimum wage hike to allowing more charter schools in New York City. But negotiations between the governor and legislative leaders ran well past an April 1 deadline, in large part because Hochul insisted on changes to the state’s bail laws. The issue has been a flashpoint between liberal Democrats, who say requiring people to pay cash to get out of jail rigs the system against poor people, and elected officials who cast it as a public safety issue.New York approved sweeping changes in 2019 aimed ...Thousands sign petition to prevent industrial development in Deerfield
