Vicky Krieps on the feminist Western ‘The Dead Don’t Hurt’ and how she leaves behind past roles

TORONTO (AP) — Vicky Krieps noticed that while there’s plenty of instruction for getting into a role, there’s curiously little about getting out of one.For Krieps, the disarmingly natural Luxembourgish actor of “Phantom Thread,”“Corsage” and “Bergman Island,” it’s not a small issue. It may even be the most important part of the process. If she’s still stuck the headspace of a character, she can’t keep moving forward. After struggling in the aftermath of her breakthrough in Paul Thomas Anderson’s “Phantom Thread,” in which she starred opposite Daniel Day-Lewis, Krieps found a solution. She could put a capstone on the character through music.“I have to leave my characters in a peaceful way and say: Now she lives in song,” says Krieps.Krieps, 39, has since followed every performance by writing a song for the character. She sings and plays acoustic guitar. She’s currently recording an album of those songs but she took a break to travel to the Toronto International...Gunmen attack vehicles at border crossing into north Mexico, wounding 9, including some Americans

MARRAKECH, Morocco (AP) — A rare, powerful earthquake struck Morocco, sending people racing from their beds into the streets and toppling buildings in mountainous villages and ancient cities not built to withstand such force. More than 2,000 people were killed, and the toll was expected to rise as rescuers struggled Saturday to reach hard-hit remote areas. The magnitude-6.8 quake, the biggest to hit the North African country in 120 years, sent people fleeing their homes in terror and disbelief late Friday. One man said dishes and wall hangings began raining down, and people were knocked off their feet. The quake brought down walls made from stone and masonry, covering whole communities with rubble. The devastation gripped each town along the High Atlas’ steep and winding switchbacks in similar ways: homes folding in on themselves and mothers and fathers crying as boys and helmet-clad police carried the dead through the streets.Remote villages like those in the drought-strick...No. 11 Texas takes on No. 3 Alabama in primetime Saturday matchup

While more famous for his Vikings tenure, the late Bud Grant was honored by the Gophers football team with a helmet sticker during the season opener against Nebraska last week. The message was no frills, like the man himself: “BUD 13”Grant, who passed away at age 95 in March, played three sports at the U — football, basketball and baseball from 1946-49. Wearing No. 13 in football, the Superior, Wis., native was a two-time All-Big Ten end under coach Bernie Bierman.Gophers head coach P.J. Fleck said he wasn’t fortunate enough to have a relationship with Bud, but Fleck has appreciated the connection built with his son, Mike Grant, the head coach at Eden Prairie High School.“Mike has been really good to me in understanding Minnesota culture and Minnesota sports,” Fleck told the Pioneer Press.Grant was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame and has been a member of the M Club Hall of Fame at the U.Related ArticlesCollege Sports | Gophers running game won’t hav...Twins shortstop Carlos Correa heats up in September

Last September may have been one that was memorable for almost all of the wrong reasons for the Twins, but as the team’s playoff hopes sunk around him, shortstop Carlos Correa was at his best, trying to help keep the team afloat.Correa’s big September — his seven home runs and 44 hits were part of a month in which he hit .355 with a 1.001 OPS — wasn’t enough to save a roster depleted by injury, but it was part of a historic trend for the shortstop. Throughout his career, September has been a big month for Correa, and it seems as if a familiar story is playing out for the shortstop, who has turned it on in recent days despite underperforming his career norms for much of this season.“It really feels like he kicks it into another gear when it gets towards this month and October,” hitting coach David Popkins said.Sure, the sample size is small, but in eight games in September, Correa is hitting .355/.429/.581 with a pair of home runs and 11 hits in eight games. BOULDER — When Colorado was finally done having its way with the Cornhuskers for three and a half hours, Matt Rhule reasoned: What’s a few more minutes?“After a game like that,” the Nebraska football coach said when team staff offered to end his postgame news conference, “I should answer everything.”Rhule and the Huskers were left humbled by fumbles, self-inflicted blunders and a bludgeoning from the Buffs on Saturday afternoon. Only a literal last-second touchdown slightly saved rival Nebraska (0-2) from maximum humiliation. Instead the final margin was merely 36-14. The Buffs (2-0) even left some points on the field as they pulled away in the second half. It was a thorough rout.“They’re obviously a super-high-tempo operation, and we knew that coming into it,” quarterback Heinrich Haarberg said. “But they did a good job executing.”“I thought they made an adjustment, and they just threw a couple balls up on third down...Latest news
