Without manager Gabe Kapler, SF Giants continue lifeless play in loss to Braves

Without manager Gabe Kapler, SF Giants continue lifeless play in loss to Braves ATLANTA — Well, throw out that theory.Gabe Kapler was not the Giants’ bad luck charm, nor the source of their offensive trouble.Absent his presence in the dugout Friday night, suspended for one game for returning to the dugout after he was ejected Tuesday, the Giants’ offense was absent as ever in a 4-0 loss to the Atlanta Braves to begin a three-game series against the best team in the sport. When Alex Cobb threw his arms up in disgust after the first pitch out of his hand snuck through the infield for a hit, it could have been the start of a very bad night against the best lineup in baseball. Instead, it was simply just another bad night for what has been the majors’ worst lineup for the better part of two months, now.Taking an 8.04 ERA in August into his start, Cobb gave the Giants what they needed, holding the powerful Braves offense largely in check. But their bats were neutered once again, on Friday by arguably baseball’s best strikeout artist, Spencer S...

Oakland school board candidates deemed eligible, despite major city error OAKLAND — Faced with another fiasco that could have sabotaged a key local election in the fall, Oakland city officials decided the race must go on.The two candidates vying for an open Oakland school board seat will be allowed to run in November, despite a critical error by the city clerk’s office that led both candidates to fall short of gathering enough signatures in the right places to be eligible. The decision by City Clerk Asha Reed, emailed Friday to Registrar of Voters Tim Dupuis and other officials, stands to resolve the election mess, though it also relies on a legal interpretation that might be vulnerable to challenges.“It would be patently unfair, and likely a violation of their fundamental right to hold public office, to disqualify these candidates” amid the situation, Reed said in the email. “We cannot support such an unjust result.”Amid changing boundaries, the city wasn’t clear about where the candidates needed to collect nomina...
