Troops kill 3 militants, foiling attack on an airbase in Punjab province, Pakistani military says

ISLAMABAD (AP) — A group of militants targeted a training air base in eastern Punjab province in the early hours of Saturday, leaving three of the attackers dead, Pakistan’s military said.The troops’ “swift and effective response” thwarted the attack at Pakistan’s Mianwali Training Air Base, keeping its personnel and assets safe, a military statement said, though three grounded aircrafts were damaged and a fuel tanker destroyed in the attack. It said the troops killed three attackers while they were entering the base, and another three were cornered. A comprehensive joint clearance and combing operation is in final stages to completely clear the area, the military said.The attack comes a day after an ambush on a military convoy killed fourteen soldiers in southwest Baluchistan province. CANBERRA, Australia (AP) — Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said Saturday he would protest a lack of transparency in China’s treatment of a detained Australian democracy blogger when meeting with President Xi Jinping in Beijing during a trade-focused state visit.The detention of Yang Hengjun without conviction for almost five years will be one of the topics raised with Xi when they meet in the Great Hall of the People on Monday.Yang is being held in a Beijing detention center awaiting the verdict of a 2021 closed-door trial on espionage charges. (KRON) -- A former coach for the San Jose Jr. Sharks was arrested by the San Jose Police Department, the Sharks Sports & Entertainment told KRON4 on Friday. The coach has not been with the program since May 2023, the Sharks said, and they did not learn of the allegations that led to his arrest until he had left the program. The Sharks did not specify what the coach was arrested for. The San Jose Police Department did not respond to a request for comment.
